At Nordvalls, we print labels for many of the foods you bring home—that is, food labels, including both bottle labels and food packaging labels. Food labels stand out because proper labeling and accurate information are of paramount importance, sharing many similarities with pharmaceutical labels. Consumers must not run the risk of being misled or deceived about what the food they purchase contains. We at Nordvalls are happy to assist you with your food labels; contact one of our specialists, and we will ensure your labeling is compliant and properly executed.
Mandatory and Required Information
For prepacked foods, certain information is both necessary and mandatory according to the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket). Prepacked foods include food packaged before reaching the consumer. It must not be possible to alter the contents of the food without opening the packaging, although the package does not need to be completely sealed.
As a general rule, mandatory information includes: the name of the food (or the descriptive name), ingredients used in production, allergen information, quantitative ingredient declaration (QUID), net quantity, use-by date, storage instructions, contact details, country of origin, nutrition declaration, and instructions for use. All of this must be clearly printed on a label capable of handling all the conditions the product is expected to encounter—such as freezing and thawing at varying temperatures, transportation, abrasion, and remaining intact over an extended shelf life.
Example of food label information for Coarsely Ground Sausage:
- Name of the food
- Quantitative indication of certain ingredients
- Voluntary information
- Storage instructions
- Net quantity of the food
- Allergen labeling
- Instructions for use
- Special labeling requirements for certain foods
- Company name and contact details
- Nutrition declaration
- List of ingredients
- “Best before” date or “use-by” date
Food Legislation – Accurate and Clear Labels
The information on food labels is essential, and as consumers, we rely on the labeling being accurate, clear, understandable, and legible. That is why this is codified in food legislation. The purpose of the law is to ensure that what we consume is safe, while also enabling consumers to make well-informed purchasing and consumption decisions. The regulatory authority monitors food information to ensure all details are correct, and they also verify the product’s actual contents against the ingredient list.
