Sequential numbering

Sequential numbering supports traceability, quality control and packaging security. It enables reconciliation checks to confirm that the correct number of pharmaceutical packs has been produced and accounted for. This is particularly important during product recalls, when individual packs may need to be traced.

Braille

For many medicines, Braille is an essential part of the labelling. Adding Braille directly to a label or pack helps people with visual impairments identify their medicines safely. Nordvalls produces labels with high-quality Braille embossing, designed to meet applicable regulatory requirements and provide clear, readable tactile information.

Vision Inspection

Nordvalls offers advanced Vision Inspection for customers who require additional checks on label quality, legibility and accuracy. Vision Inspection is a camera-based system that automatically checks each label against an approved reference. It detects deviations as they occur, helping to reduce the risk of incorrect labels reaching the customer.

Frequently asked questions about pharmaceutical labels

What is GMP?

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) is a set of internationally recognised requirements and principles for ensuring that medicines are consistently produced and controlled, with a focus on quality, safety and traceability.

GMP covers documented processes, hygiene, training, risk management, quality control, traceability and change management. Its purpose is to minimise the risk of errors, mix-ups and contamination throughout manufacturing.

At Nordvalls, we apply GMP principles where relevant to the application and the customer’s requirements. With procedures aligned with GMP principles, documented processes and full traceability, we supply pharmaceutical labels for demanding, regulated environments.

What is a tamper-evident label?

A tamper-evident label is a security label that provides visible evidence that a product or pack has been opened or tampered with. Breaking or removing the label leaves visible signs, making unauthorised access easier to detect and supporting patient and product safety.

Tamper-evident labels are widely used in pharmaceuticals, medical devices and healthcare to help protect products throughout the supply chain and show users whether a pack’s seal remains intact.

Nordvalls offers a range of tamper-evident solutions tailored to the product and application. Labels can leave a permanent pattern or message, break apart when removed or be designed so they cannot be resealed without visible evidence of tampering.

By combining security materials with high-quality printing and advanced quality control, we help customers strengthen brand protection and confidence in their products.

What are the requirements for Braille on pharmaceutical packaging?

In the EU, Braille is generally required on the outer packaging of prescription medicines and many non-prescription medicines. It helps people with visual impairments identify their medicines safely and independently.

In most cases, the medicine’s name must appear in Braille. Strength and pharmaceutical form may also be needed to distinguish it from other versions.

Braille embossing needs to meet applicable requirements for dot height, positioning and readability so that it works effectively in practice.

Nordvalls produces Braille labels and other pharmaceutical labels with precision and consistent quality. Our quality control processes help ensure that Braille embossing meets demanding requirements for patient safety and regulatory compliance.

Which label materials are suitable for cryogenic applications and sterilisation?

Cryogenic applications, where products are exposed to very low temperatures, typically require specially developed synthetic materials, such as polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PET), combined with adhesives designed for extreme conditions.

Cryogenic labels are used in pharmaceuticals, laboratories and medical technology to identify vials, test tubes and other containers stored in freezers. Depending on the specification, they can withstand ultra-low temperatures such as −80°C or, in some cases, temperatures as low as −196°C in liquid nitrogen, while maintaining adhesion and legibility. Labels may also need to withstand repeated freezing and thawing.

Sterilisation places different demands on a label. Materials and adhesives need to withstand the specified process, such as steam sterilisation in an autoclave, ethylene oxide (EtO) or gamma irradiation, without lifting, deforming or compromising print quality.

The right material depends on the application, the packaging surface and the conditions the label will encounter. Nordvalls helps you choose the right combination of material and adhesive for clear print, traceability and reliable performance.
