Linerless Labels

Efficient labelling without backing paper

A linerless label wraps around a pack like a band and is secured with a strip of adhesive. Supplied on rolls without traditional backing paper, or liner, these labels can be cut to different lengths to suit the product and application. This means less material waste, more labels per roll and fewer roll changes during application. The construction provides a large printable area for product information, ingredients, barcodes and brand messaging across several sides of the pack.

When should you choose linerless labels?

Linerless labels are well suited to a range of industries and applications where strong branding and efficient handling are essential.

Food and fresh produce

Labelling for meat, charcuterie, fish, seafood, cheese, delicatessen products and other chilled foods. Suitable for trays, cartons and other food packaging.

Ready meals

A label solution for ready meals, meal boxes, salads, soups and other individually portioned foods.

Strong shelf appeal

A large printable area gives you more room for branding, product information and messaging. Linerless labels create a consistent, attractive presentation, even on products with challenging shapes.

Less material waste

Linerless labels require no backing paper, eliminating liner waste during material manufacture, label production and application on your packaging line. This helps reduce material use and waste.

More efficient production

Without backing paper, each roll can hold more label material. This means fewer roll changes, less material handling and reduced downtime, helping your labelling operation run more smoothly and efficiently.

Different types of linerless labels

Linerless describes a construction principle rather than a single type of label. A range of label solutions can be produced without traditional backing paper. Depending on the product, packaging and application method, these can take the form of bands, belly bands, sleeves or wraps. There are also solutions in which the adhesive is activated only during application.

What do you need to use linerless labels?

Linerless labelling requires the label and application equipment to work together. The labels are applied using equipment designed to handle linerless materials. The label construction therefore needs to suit your product, application equipment, production speed and intended use.

Want to know more about linerless labels?

What is a linerless label?

A linerless label is a self-adhesive label without traditional backing paper, also known as a liner.

What is backing paper?

Backing paper, also known as a liner, release liner or release paper, is the protective material behind a conventional self-adhesive label. It protects the adhesive until application, when it is removed and becomes a waste material.

Can linerless labels be printed in multiple colours?

Yes, linerless labels can be printed in multiple colours and tailored to your design and information requirements. With the right printing technique and material, you can include colours, images, logos and other product information.

How are linerless labels attached to the product?

Linerless labels can be attached in different ways, depending on their construction and application method. A common solution uses label material with adhesive strips on the back and silicone-treated surfaces that prevent the label from sticking to itself on the roll.

During application, the machine cuts the label to the required length and wraps it around the product. The label can either wrap completely around the product, with the ends attached to each other, or have each end secured to the underside or back of the pack.

Other linerless solutions have adhesive across the entire back of the label, activated during application using water or heat, for example.
